Chapter Twenty-One: The Debate on the Abyssal Platform

Aella stood on the Abyssal Platform all morning. Last to speak. Before her: three from sealing, two from research, one abstaining Weaver, one Fundoris who gave names not positions. The Rift model glowed through the entire session.

Solvaris presented the data. Evolution, not breach. Four teenagers, not accidents. He gave everything he could. Not the letter.

The sealing faction spoke. The Forge delegate’s voice filled the cantilevered platform. Three smiths with emotional loss — “Not sick. Empty. Standing at the Mother Forge, lifting a hammer, every motion perfect to the micron. Nobody inside.” The Lantern delegate showed the blue-line distribution map. Three months ago. One month ago. Yesterday. “Accelerating. Learning to find people faster.”

The research faction responded. Solvaris’s deputy showed the Unblemished Thought’s other side: in every contact with Kaeden, it had returned what it consumed. “Not infection. Exchange. Active return implies an interactive will we haven’t understood.”

Thalen called Aella’s name.

She stood. Forbidden book on her chair, open to chapter one. Speaking slowly, every word placed.

“The Unblemished Thought isn’t evil. Seven guild leaders built it. Stripped emotion and intuition so guilds could collaborate. Not malice. V later understood the Seal was wrong. Kaelen knew from the start. V wasn’t a traitor forgotten by history. Kaelen wasn’t a madwoman erased from it. They were both choosers in fear — just chose differently. The Seal wasn’t a unified decision. It was a fear vote after Kaelen’s name was struck. This evolution isn’t an attack. It’s something that had its mouth sealed for a century, learning to speak again. It’s not stealing emotion. It doesn’t know what emotion is. It was never taught.”

Silence. Not shock. Disorientation. No one had ever defined the Unblemished Thought as untaught.

Thalen stood. Compromise. Limited contact. Monitoring. Gradual study. The observer group formally established. The four were no longer just found teenagers. They had standing.

Aella closed the book. Last page. Not Scriba’s hand. Older. Kaelen’s.

“One day someone will stand here and say we should have taught it. Not to judge us. To finish what we were too afraid to start.”
