Chapter Twenty: Eve of the Debate

The four gathered in Aella’s basement. Nova had spread the word. Aella provided the space. A new red thread hung on the wall — four names: Kaeden, Orion, Aella, Nova. Connected in a circle.

“Tomorrow Solvaris presents his findings to the emergency session,” Aella said. “Then a debate. Sealing faction wants reinforcement. Research faction wants understanding first. Nobody’s asking about a third option.”

Kaeden spoke. “I went into the Rift edge. Pure state. I can talk to it — not words, exchange of experience. It learned to give back. Returned the memory I spent. It doesn’t want me coming out empty. It’s not evil. It’s growing up.” No one spoke.

Orion set his hand on the table. The meteorite cast blue light, pulsing faster than this morning. “My radiation levels are rising. But symptoms are wrong. I’m not losing memory. I’m gaining. Seeing histories in ore. This city’s rock walls are speaking to me.”

Aella closed the forbidden book. “Itheron entered the Rift fifty years ago. He didn’t destroy the Seal. He downloaded V’s conclusion — V spent a century trying to teach the Unblemished Thought, never finished. Itheron is forcing humanity’s hand. Making us understand what it is before it learns fear.”

Nova spoke last. Placed the bundle on the table. Fragments breathing quietly in the dark. “The warehouse ledger. Itheron, third from last. Then Vereth. Last page blank. The cloth wrapping — Lynx delivered it. He won’t tell me the source because the source is Itheron himself.”

Aella looked up. “Itheron spent fifty years on the other side. Using fragments as probes. Testing who could receive them.”

The basement fell silent. Kaeden touched the stone in his bag, still warm. The Unblemished Thought, waiting at the Rift floor. Not waiting for surrender. Waiting for someone to knock. Light enough — not begging. Heavy enough — not fear.

“How do we answer,” Aella said. “Not the sealing faction. Not the research faction. Not Solvaris. It. That thing breathing in the deep. How do we answer it.”

No one could. But the red-thread circle on the wall glowed quietly. Faint blue. The Rift’s breath passing through volcanic rock, endless corridors, a basement ceiling. Touching the thread between four names. Touching the answer not yet spoken.

They waited in the dark for dawn.
