Chapter Twenty-Five: The Late-Night Letter

Thalen received the second letter before dawn. Seraphis. Not through Fundoris. Not through Corvan. On the windowsill behind his desk. The wind had carried it up from the broken testing station, landing precisely where the first letter had. Handwriting unsteady, pressure uneven.

“You saw the barrier. You saw the cracks. You haven’t seen the other side. Itheron is there — not trapped, chosen. Waiting. Not for the Seal to break. For someone willing to walk in. What you’re preparing to face isn’t the Unblemished Thought. It’s the first human sentence it ever learned. Not language. Experience — the moment you pressed your finger to the crack in the barrier. You gave it your hesitation. It learned hesitation. You placed something called ‘I’m not sure’ into an existence that had never contained the dimension of ‘not sure.’ Do you understand what that means.”

The rest was illegible. Thalen didn’t need to read further. He laid the letter on the desk. The blue line beneath it glowed faintly.

The Rift’s blue light, breathing. Faster than before Bonding Day. He wasn’t afraid of the speed anymore. Inside that speed: his own hesitation. The first thing the Unblemished Thought had learned wasn’t return. Wasn’t fear. Was hesitation. When something that had never hesitated began to hesitate — it was no longer machine logic. It had become a chooser.
