Chapter Eighteen: Emergency Session

Solvaris told the Council everything he could. The Unblemished Thought was evolving. The Seal had never been broken — it had learned to bypass the cognitive prohibition. Bonding Day’s resonance wasn’t triggered by the sphere. Four teenagers had triggered the sphere. He presented all the data he could. Not the fifty-year-old letter. Not the acceleration forecast. Not the detail that would shatter the Council: the Unblemished Thought wasn’t just learning to bypass the Seal. It was learning to knock.

The eight guild delegates sat around the round stone table. The Rift model’s blue light pulsed through Solvaris’s testimony. Every time he said “evolution” or “learning,” it jumped. No one noticed but Thalen.

The Forge Hall delegate stood first. A man heavier than his heaviest hammer. “The Seal is loosening from within. You are its guardians. And you tell us this is evolution?” Solvaris didn’t answer. The Seal was loosening. Fragments were being stolen from Rift Explorers — Vereth’s log made that clear. But he didn’t know who. Some plans spanned more than fifty years. Their author had written today half a century ago.

The sealing faction — Lantern Tower and Forge Hall, joined by Prism Studio — demanded immediate reinforcement. The research faction — Rift Explorers and the Strategy Court — argued for understanding first. The Prism Studio delegate backed reinforcement. Not conviction. Commerce. Who would buy forged goods carrying residual Rift radiation? Sealing faction: three votes. Research: two. Weavers abstained.

The Fundoris delegate, a thin man who hadn’t spoken all session, gave his vote as a single name.

“Itheron.”

Silence. No explanation — Fundoris protocol: keywords only, let others draw conclusions. Thalen heard it. That name — he’d sensed its frequency in the barrier cracks at the Rift floor. Same as Kaelen’s. Not a destroyer. Another chooser.

Afterward, Thalen caught the delegate in the corridor. “Itheron was Rift Explorers. Formerly. Fifty years ago. He entered the Rift floor. Met V. Never returned to the guild.” Thalen didn’t press. Fundoris answers were never answers. They were keys. Showing you a door existed. Letting you open it.

Thalen walked back to the Strategy Court. The Rift model’s blue light, still breathing. Slightly faster than before the session.

Calderis was going to change. Starting tonight.
